PORTLAND UNITED RES 1

DORCHESTER SPORTS 0

PORTLAND United Reserves upset Dorchester Sports 1-0 in their Dorset Premier League encounter at the Camp & Satherley Stadium.

The winning goal actually came from a Dorchester Sports defender, with three players making contact before the ball beat Nick Hutchings in the Sports’ goal.

Portland breathed a sigh of relief as Sports wasted a number of chances in the first half, Joel Hewitt opting to pass rather than shoot.

His opening was followed by two for Alex Godfrey, who fired wide twice to waste his own good work in creating the opportunities.

Carl Edwards then forced a good save from Portland keeper Sam Moggeridge but it was the hosts who took the lead in the second half.

Toby Diaz’s fiendish cross caused carnage in the Sports’ defence, his delivery nicking three players on its way into the net.

Sports were then nullified by a hard-working Portland, who gave up only one chance in the final half an hour as Moggeridge kept out Dan Sheehy’s 20-yard shot.

The result will come as a major disappointment to Sports, who won 9-0 away at Sturminster Marshall on Saturday, and after losing 3-2 at Portland last season despite leading 2-0.

Speaking to Echosport, Sports’ boss Ashley James said: “It doesn’t go our way up there unfortunately. We’ve got to move on quickly and learn from our mistakes.

“We didn’t take our chances in the first half, we played some good football and had three or four decent chances to score.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t and they got a goal on the hour. They defended well and we didn’t really offer anything after that to get back into the game.

“We’ve got to take our chances when we get them.”

Sports have no game this weekend but return to action with their first home fixture of the season on Wednesday against Bridport Reserves (7.45pm).

Sports are currently sixth in the early table, with Portland in 11th, both on three points.
