AFC STONEHAM U23s 0

WEYMOUTH U23s 10

WEYMOUTH Under-23s achieved a perfect ten goals as they hammered AFC Stoneham Under-23s 10-0 away.

Craig Adams’ young charges are now top of Hampshire Combination & Development League Under-23 Division One, six points ahead of Fareham who have played three games fewer.

First-team boss Bobby Wilkinson was involved in a minor capacity, watching on from the dugout as four senior players and two others chasing deals all got game time.

Anthony Cheshire, Brandon Goodship, Frankie Monk and Dan Roberts all started but it was substitute Elliot Rossiter that bagged the headlines with a hat-trick.

Roberts netted a brace while there were further goals for Monk plus under-23 regulars Connor Bent and Kelson Pollard.

Striker Moe Shubbar, 20, added a double himself just a day after his release from National League side Rochdale.

Also impressing was full-back Samuel Oguntayo, the Irish defender helping keep a clean sheet as he looks to find a permanent club following his release from Charlton in the summer.

And Adams was highly impressed by the performance of the senior players and his under-23s as they put on a clinic against the Purples.

He told Echosport: “We had some first-teamers mixed in, I won’t hide that.

“The gaffer wanted to put four or five in that needed some minutes, so we go along with that. It’s great experience for the younger players.

“Off the back of all the other games we’ve had, the squad’s coming together. I think we’ll get stronger as the season goes on.

“It was probably a perfect performance with and without the ball. The finishing was just out of this world, everything that went on target went in.

“It was just a really solid coming together. What we’ve said we wanted to do was to bring the two teams closer together.

“I touched on it in the summer that we wanted players ready to be in the first team from the under-23s.

“Last night that was clear to see because everyone gelled nicely.”

On Wilkinson’s influence on the fixture, Adams added: “The gaffer was there with us but he let me take it because it was the 23s.

“He wanted to be close up and see what the boys were like in and around everyone else. It’s just knitting together.”

Adams also spoke extremely highly of Weymouth’s senior players for their professionalism.

“I don’t think it could’ve gone any better,” he said.

“The example they set as a role model and then playing on the pitch, their energy. It would’ve been quite easy for them to think they’ll get 45 minutes and go through the motions.

“All of them were unreal with the younger lads. That’s what type of player there is now at the club.”

Weymouth’s win follows other big scorelines against Gillingham and Laverstock & Ford, the Terras defeating them 5-0 and 6-2 respectively.

Their next assignment is away to Millbrook Under-23s next Thursday (7.45pm).

Terras: Smalley, Small, Heaton, Pitt, Oguntayo, Cheshire, Monk, Pollard, Roberts, Shubbar, Goodship. Subs: Rossiter, Bent, Laird, J McGivney, Prestel.
