WEYMOUTH manager Bobby Wilkinson insists the Terras can earn their “rewards” from a mouth-watering trip to Torquay United this evening (7.45pm).

Wilkinson’s men make the 80-mile trip to Plainmoor looking to pick up their biggest scalp of the season.

Weymouth have not won at Torquay since 2009 when Stuart Beavon and Ryan Williams goals upset the Gulls for a 2-0 triumph.

Last time the sides met at Plainmoor, in March 2022, Torquay emerged 3-0 victors before Weymouth went on to suffer relegation from the National League.

Speaking to Echosport, Wilkinson said: “An away game at Torquay on a Tuesday night, you sign up when you manage for this kind of competition.

“This is definitely going to be a hell of a challenge, we’ve trained especially well on Saturday for this.

“It’s 11 against 11 on its day but we know it’s going to be a daunting task to go and beat them in their back yard but one we look forward to.

“I think they’re right up there. I never judge a team in November or December, and Torquay will be where they need to be at the end of the season.

“You can’t just not do it with their squad and spending, they’re in another league with Yeovil and three or four other teams.

“It’s hard to compete with them off the field but we’ve got to make sure we when we cross the white line that we compete with them on the field. That’s what I expect them to do.”

Playing at a ground such as Plainmoor is a rare occurrence in the National League South and Wilkinson urged his players to build on the 2-0 loss at Yeovil Town, when Weymouth pushed the Glovers hard in the second half.

“Let’s learn from our experiences and go out and play the way we did in the second half against Yeovil,” Wilkinson said.

“Let’s not fear them. We’ve spoken about that in great depth. You can’t start slow when you go to these big grounds and big teams, we’ve got to start fast.

“You’ve got to be on the front foot from the very first minute and play the way we’ve been playing the last few weeks.

“Hopefully three or four of our younger lads who’ve had experience at Yeovil, we’ve learned and can kick on.”

He added: “We had them watched at the weekend against Tonbridge. They like to play but then they do go quite direct when they need to.

“They adapt just like most of us managers, you adapt to any situation. They know I might press them high so they might go longer.

“We’ll see on the night and go with the situation. We’ve worked on their Plan A and Plan B, so we’ll just go there and compete.

“We’ve been playing very well away from home, we’d like to continue that and get our rewards against a big side.”

Jordon Thompson and Teddy Howe are suspended, while Charlie Rowan (calf) is out and Ben Winterburn is expected to feature for Bournemouth Under-21s against Ipswich tonight.
