PORTLAND United match-winner Sam Gadsby admitted he was “buzzing” after his 90th-minute goal helped the Blues to a dramatic 2-1 win at Bournemouth Poppies.

Connor Bent’s opener was cancelled out by Jake Adams’ penalty, conceded by Gadsby, as Poppies looked to have done enough to earn a point despite the Blues enjoying the majority of play.

However, Gadsby pounced in the box with a sweet volley in the final minute of normal time to send Portland’s considerable travelling support into pandemonium.

Reflecting on his goal and the three points, which took Portland into seventh in the Velocity Wessex League Premier Division standings, Gadsby was pleased to play his part in the win.

He said: “It’s just good to come here, a hard place to come, and get a result. Three points helps us move up the table and it’s what we need. It shows our development as a club and team.

“I’m buzzing, it’s my first league goal for the club and helps the team to win. That’s the main thing, getting three points.

“In the changing room the team spirit’s amazing. No-one argues with each other, it’s all positive. It helps you to go and get results like that, dig in to the last minute.”

Gadsby added: “Getting the chance and coming in has helped my confidence a lot and that’s another boost on top, just to keep going and progressing throughout the season.”

On his time at Portland so far and looking ahead to 2024, Gadsby said: “I’ve loved it, everyone's been so welcoming and being a young lad as well, they’ve all been so accepting.

“It’s a great club and team atmosphere. Hopefully we can go on and push as far in the league as we can, hopefully the play-offs.

“We’ve got to keep going week by week, and see where it can take us at the end of the season.”
