MANAGER Bobby Wilkinson praised his Weymouth side after beating Taunton Town 2-0 away, adding the Terras “wanted it more” than the Peacocks.

In challenging conditions featuring a blustery wind, incessant drizzle and a cut-up pitch, Weymouth had to negotiate a strong Taunton start as the hosts mustered three shots on target after 13 minutes.

Once Weymouth settled, there only seemed likely to be one team capable of winning as Brandon Goodship’s fine volley in off the post handed his club the lead.

Harry Parsons hit the bar before a ruthless second from Goodship on 71 minutes sealed the three points and took the Weymouth striker to 92 career Terras goals, surpassing Steve Claridge’s 91.

Following Weymouth’s second successive win, taking them into 16th, Wilkinson hailed his team’s work ethic.

He told Echosport: “I’m just pleased for everyone at the football club, the players, because it’s been a real tough 10 days.

“We wanted to keep momentum going, we wanted to make sure we were ready for this game. We were fitter, stronger. Man for man, we’re battling.

“You could tell one team wanted it more than the other, especially in these conditions. I don’t think they played the conditions well enough, they went route one too much.

“Listen, that’s football. I’m not going to knock them, I feel sorry for what their club’s going through at the moment. I wish them every bit of success.

“Where they are now, we were in that same situation.”

After a rocky first 15 minutes, Weymouth dominated proceedings to earn only their fourth away win of the season.

Wilkinson added: “Their starting XI’s a very good starting XI. I said if we held on for the first 15 minutes, we’ll win.

“They dominated because they were going downhill in those conditions. You’re not going to see better defending all season, let’s be real.

“I’m just a proud man, not because we’ve won. My team are giving me everything. They’re nowhere near where we want them to be.

“Winning becomes a habit but judge a man when you’re losing and never when you’re winning.”

Goodship has now moved above Ezio Touray to 10 goals this season and Wilkinson sung the striker’s praises after scoring for the seventh time in six games.

“I needed a goalscorer,” Wilkinson said. “Someone who can finish the way he’s finishing, especially when you lose the calibre of players we lost last year.

“Everyone forgets we lost 70 goals at the start of the season. Remember, I’m playing him in a different position, in and out of pockets, he deserves all the plaudits he’s getting.

“If he’s beating someone’s goalscoring record, give him that little bit of praise. He’s earned it because of his hard work.

“I will only ever praise my lads, I’m a positive manager, but it’s a team performance.”

The Vanarama National League South table also makes more enjoyable reading for Weymouth fans, who witnessed a jump of three positions following the win.

Wilkinson said: “I don’t give a monkey’s about the table. I didn’t come to this football club not to get this team promoted.

“My record speaks for itself. I’ve come here to get us out of a real tight situation in the last year, and then I want to be in the play-offs.

“I might not make them but I have to believe. I’m not interested in the bottom four, I make that clear.

“That’s where Weymouth were and it’s not why I’m here. I’m just looking if we got closer to the play-offs.”

On that note, Weymouth are now 10 points off Torquay United in seventh place going into a trip to Dartford on Saturday (3pm).
