TOM Killick believes his Dorchester Town side were full value for their 1-0 win at Didcot Town, insisting: “It wasn’t a 10-man smash and grab”.

Travelling to the Pitching In Southern League Premier South’s bottom side, the Magpies found themselves a man down after 12 minutes when Drew Eccott-Young was sent off for committing a foul as last man.

Dorchester’s response was heroic, going on to dominate Diddy although it appeared as if they might have to settle for a point until Will Fletcher slid in to score in the 79th minute.

Victory means Dorchester remain one point off safety in 20th.

Killick told Echosport: “We feared the worst losing a man 10 minutes, or whatever it was, into the game.

“Conditions were difficult, the pitch was very poor and it was very blustery, so all the ingredients to negate any prospect of a game where there’s a lot of quality on show.

“To go a man down, it gave us a mountain to climb. But great credit to the players. It wasn’t a 10-man smash and grab. On the balance of play, we had the better chances and played the better football.

“Other than an onslaught at the end of balls into our box, which you’re always going to expect, I didn’t feel they created an awful lot.

“So, to end up not just winning the game with 10 men but deserving to, is a real testament to how hard the players worked and how they adapted to the conditions.”

Asked if the red card had served to galvanise Dorchester, Killick said: “Yeah, I think it was slightly easier to cope with 10 men because there was very little football being played.

“We weren’t getting strung out and passed around. It was very difficult to make passes, it was a war of attrition and it always seemed like one goal was going to win it.

“There weren’t many clear chances but the ones that were I felt we had the majority of.

“We knew that we were playing a team that had had a good run of results and were desperate to draw us back in with them.

“It was exceptionally important and a similar situation to Harrow. We’ve managed to rise to the occasion.”

Dorchester next visit Hanwell Town tomorrow (7.45pm).
