BRIDPORT will have representation at the 2024 Paralympic Games after a talented young swimmer was named on the Paralympics GB squad for Paris this summer.

Harry Stewart, who only turned 20 on May 11, will race in the S14 category for intellectually impaired athletes as he has Asperger’s syndrome.

The condition is an autism spectrum disorder and is characterised by difficulty with perceptive skills and social interaction.

Stewart is formerly a member of Bridport Barracudas, South Dorset Tornadoes and West Dorset Swimming Club.

However, due to the lack of a 50-metre pool in Dorset, Stewart is now affiliated with Plymouth Leander Swimming Club.

Stewart has been in top form recently, marking his senior debut by claiming 100m breaststroke gold in the European Para Championships in Madeira, Portugal, last month.

Taking to the top step in Madeira proved an emotional experience for Stewart, dedicating his victory to stepfather Matthew Norris, who passed away suddenly in February.

His gold medal came after a hugely successful beginning to 2024, where he won a multi-classification bronze in his debut World Series event in Aberdeen.

Stewart also claimed the national title in London at the Aquatics GB Swimming Championships.

To help achieve his Paralympic dream, Stewart recently secured a £1,000 grant from the Dorset Community Foundation’s Lord Lieutenant’s Fund for Young and Talented.

The fund is intended to prevent youngsters from failing to make the most of their natural ability from prohibitive factors such as buying equipment, travel, accommodation, competition entry fees, coaching and more.
