PORTLAND Red Triangle Cricket Club and the Osprey Leisure Centre have formed an exciting link up that will supply quality coaching for primary school children in the area throughout the year.

The first session will take place tomorrow at the complex in Castletown between 6pm and 8pm, and Red Triangle secretary Grant Neven is excited about where the partnership could lead.

He said: "We have a similar deal with All Saints School where we provide the coaches and they provide the hall. It is primarily aimed at primary schools on Portland and it is a link up between the South Dorset Schools Partnership, the Osprey Leisure Centre and Portland Red Triangle Cricket Club.

"The first session will be tomorrow night and if it really takes off we are hoping to organise some junior tournaments and maybe even an indoor league for Primary School children."

Osprey Leisure Centre's Martin Stockley is equally as excited about the project. He added: "My job is to ensure Osprey is used by the whole community and these new cricket sessions are a fantastic way of helping us do that.

"Cricket is one of those things that is only going to get bigger as the years go by and supplying coaching for children in the area is very important.

"We have a massive hall here that is perfect and it also has the added bonus of a balcony which helps create a great atmosphere and provides a great place for parents to come and watch.

"To have cricket here for four consecutive hours every Thursday, with two hours coaching and then two hours adult play, is fantastic and hopefully there we will be loads of people taking advantage of it.

"We know people will go outside in the summer but to be able to have the opportunity to play all year round is great for the community.

"Coming from the Poole area where they have the Hurn Bridge Indoor Cricket Club, I have seen just how popular it can be.

"At the moment we have got one cricket mat and one cricket net but once more funding is on board we will be able to get more. To have people practising in four nets some day in the future would be fantastic."
