FA Women's Cup

LAUNCESTON FC LADIES 2

WEYMOUTH FC LADIES 2

(Launceston won on penalties)

WEYMOUTH suffered penalty heartache as they crashed out of the FA Women's Cup after a battling performance in Cornwall.

The Terras travelled to Pennygillam Stadium in good spirits and with the advantage of playing with the slope in the first half they immediately took the game to their opponents.

Rosie Sharpe and Kim Cheffey both went close to taking the lead before Georgia Rogers scored with a great header at the far post following a corner.

The visitors continued to press before the first of two controversial decisions by the referee five minutes before the break saw the Launceston keeper escape a sending off after levelling Corrine Parker in the box.

Instead a yellow card was shown to the culprit who went on to save the resultant spot-kick from Leanne Masters to ensure the score remained 1-0 at the break.

With Parker having to go off with concussion and a rib injury, Weymouth manager Tim Davis had to reshuffle his pack, bringing on Natalie Batchelor and pushing Jess Turk up front.

Within five minutes of the restart the referee then made another debatable call when Turk ran through and lobbed the advancing keeper from 25 yards.

The stopper once again clattered into the Terras' player as the ball found the net but once again she escaped a red card. However, she was carried off injured in the aftermath.

With luck seemingly on Launceston's side they hit back with two goals in the latter stages to take the game into extra time, which the Terras dominated without finding the net.

The visitors then lost Rogers to a calf injury and in the penalty shoot-out that followed the inevitable happened with Batchelor, Masters and Cheffey all missing to hand the fortunate hosts a spot in the next round.

Davis said: "On another day and with a fair rub of the green we would have won this match comfortably but it was not to be so now we have to concentrate on the league."
