Weymouth & Portland ladies were defeated by local rivals Oakmeadians at Monmouth Avenue in their first home game of the 2024-25 league season.
The home defeat came after a heavy 56-5 away to Havant Women II.
It was their first league game at home for a few years and the Seahorses were captained by Emma Davis and Jessica Butcher.
Weymouth started with the kick off and Oaks responded early on with a try and a conversion.
The Seahorses came back fighting with some good tackles and some runs and pinned Oaks in there 22.
Oaks then kicked over and chased the kick resulting in another try.
After some heavy tackles and rucking from both sides Weymouth’s hard work was starting to pay off, gaining possession and forcing Oakmeadians to concede numerous penalties.
After some massive runs, a quick blindside pass to Ciara Stone resulted in Weymouth getting their first try.
Just before half time Oaks came back at Weymouth with some good ball carries and dominant rucks, which saw them get another try.
As the second half started, Weymouth were unlucky to concede an early try. This seemed to galvanise the team who went looking for another score which came from a set play from the scrum.
Stephanie Coltman made a huge run down the blind side,narrowly missing touch, and managed to pass the ball while being tackled, allowing Naquita Lloyd-Edward to cross the line for a score.
The Seahorses were on the come back and after some huge tackles and rucks as Ciara Stone managed to beat two defenders and make a clean break, running from Weymouth’s half towards the try line.
However, she was high tackled just short of the try line, resulting in a Weymouth being awarded a penalty try.
With big runs from Gail Quilter, Faye Tatchell, Coltman, Charlotte Chard and our no 10 and kicker Jess Butcher, Weymouth went in search of more tries.
Oakmeadians had other ideas though and were looking for the win themselves.
With the game coming towards an end, the away side managed to seal victory with another try.
It is now the Seahorses second defeat in the Women's NC 3 South West South and leaves them seventh in the table with no points.
Next up for the Seahorses is a trip to Portsmouth Valkyries II on Sunday, October 13.
