DORCHESTER TOWN 1 WELLING UNITED 1 SHAUN Brooks’ men continue their search for an elusive first Blue Square South home win of the season after being held by Welling United.

The Magpies came from behind after an unfortunate own goal from Kevin Hill on 32 minutes left the visitors defending a slender half-time lead.

But 12 minutes into the second half a superbly timed pass from Jamie Gleeson enabled Jamie Mudge to race clear from the half-way line and draw keeper Clark Masters off his line before skilfully finding the far corner with a low drive.

After that the Magpies looked increasingly likely to win the match but they could not find a second way through the Wings’ defence who held on to extend their current unbeaten run to seven matches in all competitions.

The first chance of the match came from a right wing Nick Crittenden corner which was met by Hill whose header was saved by Masters.

Shortly after, a low shot from Mitchell Nicholson swerved away from goal and was cleared.

Then Ronayne Marsh-Brown tried his luck from 25 yards but his shot flew across goal and wide as Dorchester continued to pose the greater attacking threat.

Gareth Stewart reacted quickly to dive at the feet of Welling striker James Baker on the quarter hour mark while from a Marsh-Brown cross, Nicholson’s flying header cleared the crossbar.

At the other end, a sluggish Wings’ attack carved out a chance when Lee Blackburn’s right-wing corner found Jack Parkinson at the far post but he headed wide.

A foul on Nicholson by Parkinson then conceded a 29th minute free- kick which was taken short by Mudge to Gleeson whose shot was partially blocked but the ball ran through to Nicholson who attempted an overhead kick but his effort lacked the power needed to beat Masters.

Marsh-Brown then had a shot blocked in front of goal.

But with Dorchester seemingly comfortable, Welling were gifted the lead.

A routine header back to his keeper from Patrece Liburd caught Stewart out and the Dorchester stopper turned the ball on to his post and out of play for a corner.

Blackburn delivered the set-piece from the left flank and this was met by Parkinson whose header bounced off the top of the crossbar.

Stewart seemed convinced that the ball had gone out of play but it dropped back down in front of goal where Hill was unable to get the direction on the ball that he would have wished for and succeeded in finding the roof of his own net.

For a while the Magpies seemed stunned and for the remainder of the half lost their fluency.

But a curling effort from Critten-den tested Masters who also saved a low shot from Nicholson as the visitors ended the first half in front.

Inspired by their interval team talk, Dorchester were the first to threaten in the second half when Marsh-Brown had a shot half-cleared to Crittenden whose follow up flew over.

But Welling sounded a warning note in the 50th minute when Charlie Sheringham’s header from a Blackburn centre required a goal-line clearance from Marsh-Brown at the near post.

The breakthrough that Dorchester needed came after just 12 minutes of the half when Mudge finished coolly and the goal visibly boosted home confidence.

Four minutes later, Gleeson found Moss who pulled a 25 yard shot wide of the near post while Masters scooped up a low shot at the opposite post from Crittenden.

Little was now being seen of the Wings’ attack although Loui Fazakerley met a Lee Protheroe cross only to be denied at the far post by Stewart.

Back came Dorchester and a Crittenden corner was met by Nicholson. He laid the ball off for Mark Jermyn whose cross found Hill who looped a header wide.

The Magpies were nearly gifted a reciprocal own goal when Tony Sinclair miscued his clearance attempt. The ball flew off the top of his foot and narrowly wide.

A Mudge free-kick was then met by Moss whose powerful header deflected away for a corner while Masters cut out a 20-yard shot from Hill.

With time running out, Moss and Marsh-Brown both saw shots deflected wide although in the latter’s case, referee Lee Collins surprisingly over-ruled his assistant and awarded Welling a goal kick.

Frustrations with some of the referee’s decisions again resulted in a flurry of late bookings for the Magpies.
