NEW Wessex Bus Raceway track record holder Tim Webster is confident that the Weymouth Doonan Wildcats can continue their impressive National League form at the Isle of Wight Islanders tonight (7.30pm).

The 20-year-old, who beat Jason Bunyan’s previous best at Radipole Lane with a time of 50.9 seconds in Saturday’s win over the Newport Hornets, has been in fantastic form of late and reckons his side have nothing to fear ahead of this evening’s trip.

He said: “I am feeling very good at the moment. Thanks to Nigel Charlton of Wessex Bus, who has given me a lot of support, my equipment is in great shape and because of that I am full of confidence.

“Without Nigel’s help I doubt I would be going so well and my aim is to repay him by scoring as many points for the Wildcats as I can.

“The track at the Isle of Wight is massive and very different to the one at Weymouth but I have been practising on a few bigger circuits of late and hopefully that will pay off.

“Phil Bartlett and Jem Dicken have put in a lot of hard work this year, as have the riders, and the aim is to try and keep the momentum going, and keep picking up as many points as we can.

“We certainly do not need to fear anyone and hopefully all the hard work will pay off in the end with a second successive league title.”

Commenting on his new track record, Webster added: “At the time it was just another ride. My aim on the night was to just pick up as many points as I could so when I heard at the end of the race that I had broken Jason Bunyan’s track record over the tannoy it was a huge bonus.

“I had come close to doing it before but to actually achieve it is fantastic and when you consider Jason has been racing in the Premier League for a long time now, I must have been really going some.”

Benji Compton made his home debut for the Wildcats in the victory over Newport and Webster is tipping him to play a crucial role tonight.

He said: “Benji has fitted in really well. He is one of the team already and having ridden for Redcar and Scunthorpe he has plenty of experience when it comes to racing on big tracks so he will no doubt be looking forward to this evening.”

The Islanders will include ex-Wildcat Brendan Johnson in their line up but there are doubts surrounding the fitness of their other former Weymouth star, Tom Brown, who suffered a suspected broken collarbone last Friday racing for Somerset.

If Brown’s worst fears are realised then the Islanders are expected to take advantage of the rider replacement facility.

Wildcats: Cockle, Day, Wright, Compton, Burrows, Webster, White-Williams.

Islanders: Simmons, Brown, Hopwood, C Johnson, B Johnson, Mullins, Hill.
