KIERON Morrissey had a busy finals day on court at the Weymouth Junior Open tennis tournament.

The 13-year-old, who attends Wey Valley School, reached the semi-final of the 14-and-under event but trumped that with victories in the 16-and-under boys’ singles and the 16-and-under doubles.

More than 80 competitors enjoyed three days of breezy sunshine in what has become a popular summer holiday competition.

Several visitors from further afield boosted this year’s entries, including a group of 16 players from Kent.

In the 14-and-under event, Morrissey was narrowly beaten in three sets by Bournemouth-based Sam Walrond, who went on to lose the final to Dorchester’s impressive Justin Smith in straight sets.

Undeterred, Morrissey squeezed past his doubles partner Alex Wood (Dorchester) to claim a place in the 16-and-under final where he enjoyed a straightforward win over the higher ranked Alex Swann from St Leonards.

And to round off a good day, Morrissey and Wood overcame two players from Tunbridge Wells in the doubles showpiece.

In the younger age groups, local players had to contend with strong visiting opposition.

Bradley Webb, 11, did well to win a tight three-setter in the 12-and-under boys’ semi-final, but had little left to trouble Wimborne’s Ryan Knowles in the final. The duo then combined to take the 12-and-under boys’ doubles title.

The girls’ events were also dominated by visitors but the doubles pairing of Annie Redding (girls’ plate winner) and Bethan Jones, both regular Weymouth team members, caused problems early for the strong Kent girls before they found their form and eventually triumphed.

Tournament referee Chris Penny was delighted with the large entry, which was up 50 per cent from 2008.

She said: “We will definitely be looking to make this a five-day event in future.

“Competition is so important for a player’s development and we have several potential champions at Weymouth Tennis Club.

“Our thanks go to tournament sponsor Lynch Lane Offices and to Sportraits for the official photography.”
