REDLANDS is to get its very own taste of the London 2012 Olympics.

Talented athletes, including former Olympians, will head to the Weymouth-based sports centre for a four-day extravaganza aimed at inspiring the local community to get involved in sport.

Getting the showpiece underway on Monday, November 9 will be British junior taekwondo hopefuls aiming to reach to the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Tuesday’s focus is badminton with Olympians and former England number ones Tracy Hallam and Steve Butler in attendance.

Wednesday sees a table tennis demonstration from Olympic ambassador and England number one Andrew Baggaley, while to complete the week – on Thursday, November 12 – the Portsmouth City Smugglers, featuring several Great Britain Under-20 players and the Weymouth Bandits take to the basketball court.

A spokesperson said: “We hope to ensure that this will be an annual event in the sporting calendar for Weymouth, highlighting some of the best UK athletes from across the country in a mixture of different sports that people may not normally have the opportunity to see locally.

“It will be all about having fun, getting involved and inspiring the young talent we have in Dorset to get active in sport and possibly one day they could be going to an Olympic Games.

“There will be plenty of other activities taking place each evening, with opportunities for the public to participate in the sport against the internationals and win prizes, as well as opportunities to chat with the athletes and meet the coaches.”
