£400 raised in Sam’s memory AN inline roller hockey tournament held in memory of Sam Hoskins helped raise hundreds of pounds for the Weymouth hospice where she was cared for in her final weeks.

Mike Bills organised the tournament, with help from his partner Debbie Smith, brother Matt Pearson and Weymouth player Andy Prescott, to remember Sam and raise much-needed cash for Weldmar Hospicecare Trust.

Around £400 was collected through the raffle, with more donated money yet to be counted by Weldmar from its bucket collections.

“Sam would have appreciated it very much and we are looking at doing it again next year as well, bigger and better as well if we can,” said Matt Pearson. “A lot of people did help us this year and we had prizes from the likes of Mitsubishi, the Crown Hotel and Weymouth Football Club.

“We are going to try and get even more clubs involved next year.”

Weymouth Underground won the tournament at Redlands Community Sports Hub with victory in all three of their games, the most crucial being the 11-5 success over Ringwood Sharks, who finished second.

Chris Tilley (four), Mats Hansson (three), Andy Prescott (two), John Tilley and Darren Fry got the winning goals in that game.

South West Panthers finished third, just ahead of Sam’s Stray Cats.

Speaking about Weldmar Hospicecare Trust, Pearson added: “Towards the end when she was still there, they made Sam feel human and the sort of state she was in she really, really needed that.

“Mike would like to thank everyone that took part and for the donations.

“Any company wanting to help with donations for next year’s tournament can get in contact.”
