WEYMOUTH boss Brendon King is hoping to open contract talks with Ben Gerring and Kyle Bassett over the next couple of days.

The talented duo took part in a trial game at Blue Square Bet Premier outfit Stockport County on Sunday but it appears they both now see their futures at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

King told Echosport yesterday: “I have spoken to both Ben and Kyle since Sunday and we are hoping to sit down with them this week with a view to getting them on contracts.

“Even before the weekend, they had both made it clear to me they were interested in coming here and I would be absolutely delighted to get them on board.”

Defender Gerring turned down re-engagement terms back in May but is now willing to re-open negotiations while striker Bassett is keen to prove his worth after being released by Exeter City at the end of last season.

King, whose side beat a West Ham United XI 3-0 on Saturday, added: “Ben loves playing for Weymouth Football Club and since last season he has grown as a man and become a lot better player.

“He leads by example and his performances so far this summer have been fantastic.

“As for Kyle, he is still very young but has bags of potential.

“I spoke to people involved at Exeter about him a few weeks ago and they said he was too slight at the present moment for League Football but he has done a little bit of work recently and has certainly looked very sharp in the friendlies.

“His scoring record for their youth team was excellent and the thing about natural goalscorers is that they can score goals wherever they are.

“He can also play off the shoulder, which is where we see him at the moment, and although he still needs to work on a few parts of his game I am sure he would prove a very good addition to the squad.”

As well as Gerring and Bassett, King is also looking to add a couple more experienced heads to his ranks, particularly with midfielder Rob Wolle-aston’s future still far from certain.

He said: “So far our performances in the friendlies have been good but as I said after Saturday we are not getting carried away.

“There is a good buzz in the dressing room at the moment and no big-time Charlies but we are still looking to add one or two more.

“We are not too far away but it would be nice to get a couple more experienced players in to strengthen the squad if we can.”
