BRIDPORT 2 WELLS CITY 4

WELLS City completed the double over Bridport with victory at St Mary’s Field last night.

Having suffered a 6-2 defeat in Somerset at the end of August, the Bees were keen to set the record straight on home turf.

And despite producing some of their best play of the season, the hosts still slipped to a 4-2 reversal.

Boss Trevor Senior said: “We played really well in the first half, probably as good as we have done all season. We knocked it around well and inside two minutes Sam Charles hit the post.

“Tom Richardson then had a header saved but with their first attack they scored.

“It was a good finish to be fair but we were disappointed as we’d been playing really.

“We still created some good chances before Dan Wise put in a great cross and Tom Richardson glanced in a header to make it 1-1.

“We then had about five or six corners on the trot but five minutes before half-time they scored with their second chance of the game. Joe Charles tried to clear it but only headed it back into the middle and they scored.

“I was wondering how they were ahead as we had dominated the game, but we responded well again and Jamie Morgan knocked the ball from right to left and Matt Condliffe delivered for Sam Charles to make it 2-2 at half-time.

“In the second half, Chris Senior had a good effort well saved by the keeper, who also saved Matt Condliffe’s shot on the rebound. If that had gone in who knows what would have happened, but we got punished and they made it 3-2.

“The disappointing thing is that after that goal, everything changed. They scored a fourth five minutes later and it was as though we had lost our way. There was still time for Darren Lock to hit the crossbar but it was too little, too late.”

The Bees’ chief, whose side host Brislington on Saturday (3pm), added: “We had a constructive chat in the dressing room after the game and I said that in order to see games out we need to be more clinical with our finishing. At the same time we don’t need to go chasing games.

“When Wells went in front you could see they were well drilled and although we have experience in our squad, we can be a little naive at times and try to win games when we need to be patient.”
