MOONFLEET’S summer season closed with the club’s competitions finals.

In the drawn pairs final, Dave Drage and Chris Thompson faced Mairie Mathie and June Evans in an evenly contested match, with the scores 12-11 to the former after 10 ends.

The Mathie and Evans combination edged ahead 14-12 at 12 ends but then a run of five winning ends from the Thompson pairing opened up a lead of 18-14, which proved vital as they went on to win 20-16.

In the pairs final, Mairie Mathie and Jack Mathie took on Ed Hughes and Martin Puckett with the score 5-3 to the latter after four ends.

The fancied pair of Hughes and Puckett then took control, winning the match 31-4.

In the singles showpiece, Tony Bolt met Chris Thompson in a best of five sets encounter.

Thompson fought back from 5-2 down to win the first set 8-5.

In the second set it was Bolt’s turn to respond. Being 5-4 down, he won the set 8-5 to leave honours even.

Bolt then took control of the match, winning the next two sets 8-2 and 9-3 to claim the crown.

In the Australian pairs final, Amanda Williams and Bryan Allen took on Larry Mather and Dave Grey with the Allen pairing dominating the first six ends 10-0, only for Mather and Grey to fight back and fine themselves just 10-7 down after 10 ends.

Nine shots to the Allen pair from the next two ends opened up a 19-7 lead but again the Grey pair refused to give in, closing the score to 20-18 with a six on the 17th end.

However, their fight back did not prove sufficient with the Williams and Allen combination winning three of the last four ends to claim a fine victory, 25-19.

Bolt, Alan Kempster and skip Norman Byden met the strong trio of Doug Picton, Hughes and Puckett in the triples contest with the latter rink opening up a 9-4 lead after eight ends.

They then went on to dominate the rest of the match, eventually winning 24-4.

In the drawn triples final, Stan Burr, Mairie Mathie and skip Kempster faced Tony Alston, Roy Paull and skip Thomp-son with the Kempster rink edging a close start 5-4 after six ends.

Kempster and co extended their lead to 14-6 at 12 ends only for a fine four from the Thompson trio to close the gap to 14-10 but it was the former who controlled the latter stages to claim victory, 19-11.
