NICK Holmes has withdrawn from the race to be named Dorchester Town’s new boss.

The ex-Salisbury City manager made a late bid to take the reins at the Avenue Stadium but has now pulled out of the running following talks with chairman Shaun Hearn.

Echosport understands that West Ham legend Julian Dicks, former Portsmouth keeper Alan Knight and Frome Town boss Darren Perrin are now the frontrunners to fill the void, unless the board of directors opt to stick with current caretaker Phil Simkin, who has led the Magpies on a six-match unbeaten run since Ashley Vickers was dismissed last month.

On the topic of Holmes, Hearn said: “We had a chat with him and although he would love to do something with the club, the timing isn’t quite right for him.

“He has other things going on which would mean that he can’t fully commit to the job.”

It is unclear whether a new manager will be in place for Saturday’s visit of lower-league Gosport Borough in the third qualifying round of the FA Trophy.

* The club’s associate directors have organised a volunteering morning this Saturday for cleaning and maintenance at the Avenue Stadium.
