KIERON ‘King’ Clewitt produced a masterclass to overcome Portland’s Tom Jarvis on a 16-bout card at the Wessex Tournament.

The Dorchester & District ABC member entered the ring in great shape and immediately went on the attack by catching his opponent with several heavy blows, including some crisp replies to some sharp inside body work from the islander.

Both competitors continued to try and gain the upper hand in the second with a more cautious Clewitt placing some precise right uppercuts through the high guard of Jarvis, who worked well behind a low held left.

The county town boxer then began to use his niggling left jab to good effect to keep his rival on the outside, where he eventually set him up for a big attack late in the round.

Jarvis continued to step forward though and it was not until the third that Clewitt finally secured the win with some free-scoring combinations followed by a well-time left hook.

At the end of the contest the crowd showed their appreciation for both competitors, who deserved huge credit for their respective performances.

There was also a shock result at the event for Dorchester’s Tom Hillyar, who stepped into the squared circle as a last-minute substitute for the injured Jamie Gosney.

Despite going into the clash a non-bouter, Hillyar showed no signs of nerves in front of the packed crowd as he stood toe-to-toe with Sturminster Newton’s Luke Young, who had stepped through the ropes twice before.

Young controlled the pace of the encounter in the early exchanges but Hillyar soon regained some composure with some intelligent boxing.

The Stur boxer then tested his opponent’s body and chin but the Dorchester novice remained unmoved, giving him huge confidence going into the second round.

Taking advantage of his power and long reach, Hillyar suddenly began to land some superb right crosses before Young responded in what was beginning to turn into a real ding-dong battle.

The faster tempo clearly suited Hillyar and in the third he drove home excellent jabs and countering rights to warrant the decision in what was an excellent bout of action-packed boxing.

Dorchester club chairman Steve Scott, along with coaches Ben Geyser and Jon Jo Look, all agreed afterwards that Hillyar had amazed everyone in his first in-ring experience.

Scott said: “To beat an excellent boxer the way he did shows his incredible strength and potential.

“I also thought Kieron did exceptionally well too against Tom Jarvis.

“Both lads have big appetites for the sport and it was great to see them box so well.”
