DORCHESTER TOWN RES 2

WIMBORNE TOWN RES 3

ROBBIE Taylor took great heart from his side’s spirited fight back – even though Wimborne Town went on to claim the spoils.

Trailing by two goals in their Wyvern Challenge Shield Group A opener, the Magpies’ second string showed great character to level proceedings courtesy of substitute Jack Twyford and Danny Way.

However, it was the visitors who had the final say, grabbing a late winner at the Avenue Stadium.

Reserve-team boss Taylor remained upbeat nonetheless.

He said: “The lads played very well to be honest and I was pleased with the overall performance.

“We dominated the game and their keeper was probably their best player but from the five chances Wimborne had, they scored three goals and that’s what’s important.

“We were 1-0 down at half-time and there’s always that fear that the boys might panic and try to force things.

“But the reaction we got was superb, they were patient and they tried to build slowly.

“Unfortunately we went 2-0 down but they kept their calm and brought it back to 2-2, at which point we looked like we would win it. But we gave away a third.

“The lads are learning all the time and you can only learn from your mistakes, which they seem to be doing to be fair to them. The result was disappointing but there were some good individual performances, particularly from the younger players.

“Danny Way was exceptional and deserved his goal, Alex Godfrey showed some great touches and Sam Buckler is going to be one to keep an eye on.”

The Magpies return to Wyvern Premier League action tomorrow with a trip to Christchurch (3pm).

Taylor added: “It will be another tough one as they are fourth in the league. But in this league you can’t gauge too much from looking at the table.”

The county town side could be without Jamie Symes (eye) and Aston Butcher (ankle) after both men sustained injuries during the midweek defeat.

Taylor said: “Jamie’s got a nasty gash on his eye and Aston went over on his ankle.”

Magpies: Floyd, Butcher (Twyford 25), A Symes (Tennant 75), S Buckler, S Walker, M Buckler, J Symes (Beals 15), Taylor, Carlile, Godfrey, Way.
