GEORGE Rolls insists he has left Weymouth Football Club in “a great position”.

The controversial figure acquired the majority shareholding back in November 2009 before handing control to his wife Amanda.

Despite the move, Rolls continued to run affairs at the Bob Lucas Stadium but has now sold his family’s shares to director Nigel Biddlecombe for £20,000.

The Cambridge-based businessman claims he is proud of his achievements at the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division outfit, even though his tenure was constantly criticised by sections of the Weymouth faithful.

Rolls also had a message for Terras’ fans as the new regime prepares to take charge.

He said: “Please get behind the club. It has a great set-up with a good squad under manager Brendon King and his assistant Matt Groves.

“The play-offs are not out of reach and if not this year then the team can certainly go for it next season.

“As far as finances are concerned the club is in a great position and if it wasn’t for a couple of postponed games and the flood in the bar then the club would be breaking even.

“I have no sour grapes and I’m sure I’ll be visiting Weymouth and watching some games in the future.”

Rolls, who famously sacked Ian Hutchinson, just 12 days after offering the ex-boss an extended deal, went on to add: “I am very proud with what I have done at the club since I took over two and a half years ago.

“I saved the club and turned it around. People were very down at the time before I joined and I think I have left the club in a great position.

“I always said I would do what’s best for Weymouth FC and would hand the club back to the community, and this is what I have done.

“Vice-chairman Mark Cole-man is one of the best guys I have ever worked with and he and his wife Vicky have worked tirelessly for the club.

“As part of the deal Mark will receive 109,000 shares, which is an 8.1 per cent share of the club, with Nigel taking the balance.

“I always said I would know when the time was right to leave and with the Wessex Fantasy Football pulling their funds and some of the community not backing me this is the right time.”

The former chairman is now free to complete a takeover of crisis-club Kettering Town.

He told Echosport: “No decision has been made. I’m looking at things at the moment.

However, speaking to the Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph, Rolls said: “Let’s see what happens over the next few weeks but I’ll be working with the club, the trust board and Ken Samuel to see if we can help keep Kettering in the Conference Premier this season.”

Prior to a deal being struck, Tony Campbell, former chief operating officer at Plymouth Argyle, withdrew his interest in a potential takeover.

He told the Echo: “I was due to have a meeting with the Weymouth Supporters Association to outline my position, but given the overwhelming support for Nigel Biddlecombe and his bid it would be divisive if I continued with my interests.

“And in the best interests of the football club there needs to be a unified fanbase.”

He added: “Although it would be an honour and a privilege to help shape the future of such a wonderful club I have informed Mr Rolls that I no longer wish to progress my interest.”
