WINCANTON TOWN 3

Chickerell UNITED 0

MAURICE Welch felt his Chickens were hard done by at high-flying Wincanton Town.

Chickerell United’s four-match unbeaten run was ended in Somerset courtesy of a 3-0 defeat.

But the visitors more than matched their fourth-placed opponents and boss Welch believes they deserved better.

He said: “It was a good game of football to be honest, despite very windy conditions.

“We played against the wind in the first half and I thought we were going to be up against it, especially as we also had a few players cry-off before the game.

“But we started pretty well and for the first 20 minutes we were the better side. They hadn’t had a single chance but as we headed a cross clear, their guy hit an absolute screamer from 30 yards into the top corner.

“We hit the bar when Jon Welch curled one in, Stew Walbridge beat three players but shot just over from 15 yards and then Josh Why pulled the ball back for Jon who couldn’t quite reach it.

“We went in at half-time 1-0 down but we were definitely the better footballing side. Although we had the wind in our favour for the second half, it seemed to work against us.

“But we still had opportunities and Liam Miles headed over before the best chance of the game fell to Jon but he missed his kick when it seemed a certain goal.

“Then, on the break, they got a second even though their player brought the ball down with his hand, before scoring a third to wrap it up.

“The scoreline was harsh on us but they were clinical finishers to be fair to them, and it was the same when they beat us at our place.

“Our lads played tremendously well and I could not fault them. We deserved more out of the game and there were a lot more plusses to come out of it.

“I was disappointed with the result but not the performance.”

The Chickens will hope for better fortunes when they travel to mid-table Blandford United this Saturday.
