THREE-TIME Olympic gold medallist Ben Ainslie secured a historic sixth Finn world title today, albeit in frustrating circumstances.
The 35-year-old, who will start the relay of the Olympic flame at Land’s End this morning, held a 20-point cushion heading into the JP Asset Management Finn Gold Cup medal race, which he only needed to start and finish to secure the title.
However, racing was called off halfway up the first leg due to light winds and competition never restarted, meaning Ain-slie took home gold.
“It is great. I am very happy,” said Ainslie, who was joined on the podium by silver-winning Skandia Team GBR team-mate Ed Wright.
“It was a shame that there wasn’t enough wind to race because we have had a fantastic week of racing down in Falmouth.
“I am really happy with how things have gone, it has been a great competition and now I am looking forward to the Olympics.”
