FOLLOWING a strong first round performance, Tornadoes were drawn against tough opposition in round two of the Southern Junior League (SJL).

The Osprey Leisure Centre-based club competed at Weymouth alongside Swim Bournemouth A, Poole, Keynsham, Bath Dolphins and West Dorset Warriors.

The Stylish Stitches-sponsored team worked hard with a total of 32 personal best times recorded.

In the individual events, Tornadoes finished second, third or fourth place in 18 of the 32 events.

Second place finishes: Scott Greaney, 9 years’ 25m breaststroke & 25m butterfly; Freya Stanger, 10 years’ 50m backstroke; Josh Rowe, 10 years 50m backstroke; Phoebe Mills, 9 years’ 25m backstroke.

Third place: Frankie Arrowsmith, 12 & under 50m backstroke.

Fourth places: Tabitha Samouelle, 9 years’ 25m freestyle & 25m breaststroke; Kirsty Holmes, 11 & under 50m backstroke; Josh Frampton, 11 & under 50m backstroke & 50m freestyle; Hannah Marklew, 12 & under 50m butterfly; Callum Mullins, 11 & under 50m butterfly & 50m breaststroke; Theo Byrne, 9 years’ 25m backstroke; Abigail Barnes, 9 years’ 25m butterfly; Khai Locke-White, 10 years’ 50m freestyle; Josh Rowe, 12 & under 50m backstroke.

The relay events against the larger clubs were challenging and for much of them Swim Bournemouth were out in front with Poole, Keynsham and Bath tussling for second and third place.

However, Tornadoes’ efforts were rewarded when the boys’ 11 and under medley team of Josh Rowe, Kane Law-Smith, Callum Mullins and Josh Frampton proved their ability with a third-place finish.

Solid performances from the nine and under girls’ medley team of Abigail Barnes, Jessica Turrell, Phoebe Mills and Tabitha Samouelle, the 11 and under boys’ freestyle team of Mullins, Law-Smith, Khai Locke-White and Frampton, and the 12 and under boys’ medley team of Mullins, Law-Smith, Rudy Sawtell and Frampton, saw them gain fourth-place finishes.

Coach Ali Holmes said: “This was a tough draw for the team competing against the larger teams like Swim Bournemouth, Keynsham and Poole.

“However, the swimmers demonstrated great team spirit and can be proud of their efforts.”

Final points scores: 1 Swim Bournemouth 260; 2 Keynsham 188 (9 x 1st place); 3 Poole 188 (7 x 1st place); 4 Bath Dolphins 155; 5 Tornadoes 127; 6 West Dorset Warriors 104.
