MORE than 50 members gathered around the green at Melcombe Regis for the annual club competitions.

The prestigious men’s singles title went to Doug Plumpton as he saw off John Samways 21-15 in a hard-fought battle.

Bill Bailey defeated Den Branney 22-15 in the men’s handicap singles final and there was also success for Dave Wise in the men’s veterans’ singles following a 21-16 win over George Constant.

The Jim Chislett Cup set singles (best of five) saw Samways come out on top. He picked up three sets to defeat the popular Fred Amey to finally seal a trophy after being a runner-up on many other occasions in different competitions.

The men’s handicap club pairs proved a ding-dong affair between Bailey and Plumpton, and Roger Skidmore and Samways. The game was tied at 11 apiece at 15 ends before Bailey and Plumpton won through 18-17.

The veteran pairs final saw Bryan Tovey and Bob Bovey edge a battle royal 17-15 against Mike Escott and Samways.

In the ladies’ section, there was success for Joanne Branney in the singles as she overcame Jennifer Griffiths.

Joanne Branney went 11-8 up and managed to hold on for a 21-18 victory despite her opponent having pulled back to 14-14 at 17 ends.

The two-wood title also went to Joanne Branney following a 16-11 win over Sylvia Reynolds, but the latter did enjoy glory in the draw pairs handicap where she and her partner Maureen Doster claimed the crown with a 26-14 triumph over Marjorie Hutchings and Joyce McFadden.

Joanne Branney then returned alongside Griffiths in the Jean Howlett handicap pairs, where they overcame Peggy Walker and Chrissie Ambrose 32-18 before Ruby Spavins and McFadden enjoyed success in the draw pairs.

They saw off Mary Irvine and Joanne Branney 16-13. Spavins and Wise also won the mixed pairs with a 22-21 victory over Joanne Branney and Len Griffiths while Joyce Jones, Amey and Plumpton took the Ted Churchhouse mixed triples title with a 19-14 win against Ambrose, Irvine and Samways.
