WEYMOUTH COWBOYS 62 CREDITON CHARGERS 74

THE Cowboys may have got shot down in the second half of this clash against the Chargers but there were a lot of positives to take from their performance.

The Weymouth outfit entered the contest looking for a change of fortunes following a poor run of form, and in the early exchanges they more than held their own against strong opposition.

Crediton took an early lead in this Exeter & District Division Two clash but some good defence from the Cowboys soon saw them playing harder on offence.

A basket from Sam Brown and back-to-back baskets from Chris Canham soon opened Weymouth’s account and gave Crediton a warning that they were in for a tough game.

The Chargers briefly took the lead but three-pointers from Alex Fuhrmann and Jake Kinder made the match more even, until scores from Jim De Bertrand and Vitoldas Balciunas solidified Weymouth’s 30-28 lead at the end of the first half.

Unfortunately, the second half wasn’t as successful as Crediton’s big presence around the basket made it tough for Weymouth to guard.

Despite some good defence, Crediton went on a 12-point scoring run without reply and that turned out to be the difference between the two sides.

Baskets from Josh Turner and Ben Stokey proved that the Cowboys still had something left in the tank, but despite a noble effort from Fuhrmann late in the fourth quarter Crediton stole the win.

Player/coach Fuhrmann said: “It was a shame that such a good performance on defence wasn’t rewarded with a win.

“There are a lot of positives to take from this game, especially knowing that our opponents could compete at Division One level.”
