WEYMOUTH Basketball Club marked the end of their 2013/14 season with their annual presentation, celebrated at Aura Rest-aurant and Bar on the seafront.

The club continued to find success developing their nine teams, and they had two junior players called up to the Dorset regional team.

The senior men’s team also won the Exeter & District Division Two play-offs.

Highlights also included improvements in the youth development programme, co-ordinated by Alex Fuhrmann on Saturday afternoons.

The Under-12s, 14s and 16s all competed in the Dorset Storm Central Venue Leagues, with the 12s and 14s securing top half success.

Weymouth’s under-9 programme also continues to grow as the club registered a record number within the age group, offering sessions for only £1 per child.

The men’s teams, consisting of the Bandits, Cowboys and Raiders, all showed a competitive spirit in their respective leagues with mixed results.

The Cowboys proved their worth, winning some very high profile games in their competition.

The Bandits had the hardest task in Solent Division One and finished bottom of the table.

Meanwhile, the Raiders, in their first year in Solent Division Four, were able to stay away from the foot of the table with a solid run to close the season.

Weymouth Huskies also showed determination and promise, switching back to the Exeter & District Ladies’ competition and landing a very respectable fifth place to make it their most successful season to date.

Presentations were made to individual players from each team in the club, including the most valuable player, most improved player, best defensive player and the hustle award.

Three more trophies were given to those in the club who had made the effort off the court.

Eric Olson was given coach of the year for his continued work with the Under-14s, as well as running the Cowboys.

There was the annual Huw Price Service to Basketball Trophy which also went to Olson in recognition of his willingness to represent the club as a county referee.

There was also the creation of a new award, one which allowed the players to vote for their own players’ player of the year.

The winner by a single vote was Vitoldas Balciunas.

Club development officer, Under-16s coach and first-team coach Alex Fuhrmann said: “We would like to thank all members and parents for attending the evening, and especially Aura for their support.

“We will still strive to have a positive impact on our community and we are excited about moving forward.”

The club maintains training throughout the summer and welcomes those who wish to attend.
