SOUTH Dorset Jurassic Coasters were crowned Torbay Tigers tournament champions after beating Taunton 43-23 in final of their first ever competitive competition.

Playing at Paignton College, the team won their first game against French team Morlaix 46-29 which they followed up with a 43-23 win against over eventual finalists, Taunton. Winning these two games meant they topped their group, giving them an easier run through the knockout phases.

The next game was a closely-fought battle against tournament hosts Torbay Tigers, who had come second in their group having played against Plymouth and Exeter.

The Coasters won this game by just one point, which clinched their place in the final.

In the final they faced Taunton for a second time, who were looking for revenge.

The score at the half way point was tied at 17-17.

The Coasters worked hard and went on to win the final, beating Taunton 43-23.

Steve Sherlock, team coach for the tournament, said: “We are all delighted with this fantastic result in our first competitive games with a new team.

“The boys have got to know each other in training and are now playing some great basketball which is a pleasure to watch.”

Russ Weaver, assistant coach, added: “The whole team played their part brilliantly and their hard work has given them their first trophy.”
