DORSET captain Luke Webb called on his exciting squad to showcase their skills in the National Counties T20 finals day at Tring tomorrow.

Dorset, runners-up in the previous finals day in 2019, face Cambridgeshire in their semi-final (1.30pm). The winners will then play Oxfordshire or Cheshire in the final (4pm).

Webb’s men won through to the last four after dominating Group Two, finishing with a brutal double victory at Cornwall in which their batters hit top gear.

Speaking to Echosport, the Bournemouth star said: “It’s a great achievement, especially being the only team that’s got to the finals day both times.

“I just see it as a reward for the team for playing some great cricket. You have the four best teams in the country and I’m sure all four are pretty confident they can win it.

“We’re looking forward to it, it should be a great day with loads of people watching and a good opportunity for our boys to showcase their skills.”

On the performance at Cornwall, Webb felt the displays of opening bats Tom Prest and Sam Young had been particularly inspirational.

He said: “It was electric. Youngy especially and Tom, some of the strokeplay was remarkable. They’re two high-class players.

“Then Alex Eckland in the first game played an absolute blinder. It was a really good wicket at Cornwall, really good outfield and it made for a really good day of cricket.

“It was good to get the win in the first game, it didn’t go down to the second like it did a few years ago, so that was nice.”

Webb also admitted he is unsure what to expect from Cambridgeshire, who do not often cross Dorset’s path.

He said: “It’s interesting. There are a handful of sides that I’ve never come up against at this level. Cambridgeshire is definitely one of them.

“Saying that, cricket is such a small circle these days and we’re familiar with a lot of their players anyway. They’re obviously a top-class side.

“It’s a hard competition to qualify for finals day, you have to play well to get there. They’re deservedly there and I’m sure they’ll be tough opposition in the semi.”

Dorset are scheduled to play the second semi-final, with the final immediately afterwards should they win.

Asked if that was an advantage, Webb said: “I don’t think it’s either or. It is what it is.

“I know they played the four-day final there last year. I’ve played at Tring a little bit and it’s a good wicket.

“I just see it as the schedule we’ve been given. It’s nice to get a bit of time before to chill out and then go into the game in the early afternoon.”

Brad Currie misses out through Scotland duties in the USA but Dorset are otherwise at full strength.
