PORTLAND RT 191-7 (7pts) lost to WIMBORNE & COLEHILL II 192-6 (18pts) by four wickets

PORTLAND Red Triangle lost their first home County Division One game of the season with a four-wicket defeat to Wimborne & Colehill Seconds.

Matt Randell’s men were looking to build on their victory at Swanage on the opening day but came up against a Minstermen side that raced to their win with ten overs remaining.

Portland won the toss and batted first on a wicket that is notoriously tricky to chase on, but the visitors made light work of the Triangle top order.

Jack Bassett (4-46) took four wickets in his opening spell to leave Portland on 54-4.

But Joe Adkins (66) and Callan Laws (57) hit back with half-centuries to help boost the islanders to 191-7.

Portland looked to be on course for victory as their spinners ground Wimborne down to 116-6, Randell (2-26) and Jack Marsh (2-33) impressing.

However, Nick Massey’s fine unbeaten 50 from 45 balls, including nine fours and a six, helped take Wimborne over the line with the help of a massive 40 extras.

Randell told Echosport: “It was really disappointing. Batting-wise we were maybe 20 or 30 runs short.

“We had a par total but certainly more competitive than what we made it look like with the ball.

“Lawsy looked really good and maybe in a few months’ time he’d go on and score bigger. Joe batted well, paced the innings perfectly.

“It was good for one of our lower order to chip in. It gives the top order confidence.”

He added: “Bowling-wise, none of our seam bowlers bowled well. We ran out of options quickly.

“Me and Jack bowled 18 overs and we were scratching our heads as to where the extra over would come from, just with how poorly people were bowling. It was disappointing from that front.”
