DORCHESTER II 82 (0pts) lost to WEYMOUTH 84-0 (20pts) by ten wickets

WEYMOUTH cantered to a ten-wicket hammering of Dorchester Seconds to round off their County Division Two season in style.

Facing the league’s bottom side, Weymouth were looking to do the double over their Ridgeway rivals following a seven-wicket win at Redlands back in July.

Hopes were high for a big score with the bat but Weymouth were forced to bowl first after losing the toss.

And the Seasiders’ seam attack got stuck into the hosts early on as Jonny Armfield (2-21) and Jack Sapsworth (1-22) removed the top three, including ex-Seasider John Firkin (18).

After that it was an assault by spin as skipper Harry Mitchell (3-9) and Shafeek Urumancheri (4-24) worked around 21 off eight balls from Joe Power and a dogged 17 from Gavin Egan to skittle Dorchester for 82.

In reply, Weymouth crashed the ball to the boundary with ease as they ticked off the runs without losing a wicket in just 8.1 overs.

Jack Sapsworth smashed 36 from 27 balls, including five boundaries, while Lloyd Beals added three maximums and four boundaries in his 41 from 22 deliveries.

Their efforts enabled Weymouth to reach 84-0 and cement fifth place in the table, ensuring only 34.5 overs were bowled in the match.

Speaking to Echosport, Mitchell said: “It was great to end on a win like that. We were clinical, brutal and didn’t give them a sniff.

“We took all our chances. They’ve got some good young lads but it was a bit disappointing for our lads.

“We ideally wanted to bat first and put on a big score after last week and give more of our guys a go.

“That’s the only down point, I couldn’t give everyone a game, but the openers got us off to a good start with Sappy and Jonny.

“Spin was brilliant in the middle and we fielded fantastic. Then with the bat Lloyd and Sappy got the job done in a hurry.

“That was the plan to finish it as quickly as possible and then watch the second team. It ended our season really positively seeing them get over the line in the last game.

“It was a nice club feeling at the end where we were all together, and that did end the season on a high.”

Assessing the season as a whole for the first team, Mitchell said: “A poor start, mixed bag in the middle and then a good finish.

“When you’ve got guys hitting form now with bat and ball, if that happened at the start of the year it could’ve been a different season and improved availability through the middle.

“With the poor start we had, people had other plans. You can’t fault them for that. It’s not where we wanted to be but we’ll go again for next year.”

New Division Six champions Weymouth Seconds put the cherry on top of their title win by beating Cattistock & Symene by four wickets at Redlands.
