WEYMOUTH Sports remain hot on the heels of early pacesetters Easton United after they maintained their perfect start to the campaign with a 2-0 victory at Moreton.

Sports entered the game on the back of a 4-1 victory over AC Matravers, and they made it two wins from two thanks to goals from Jason Thoday and Gerry De La Planque, who was sent off in the opening day triumph against AC.

Boss Steve Alcock was pleased with his side’s efforts but admits there are still one or two creases that need ironing out.

He said: “It was a pretty one-sided affair to be honest. We had the lion’s share of possession, and more, and with the effort the lads put in we should have come away with more goals.

“I think we need to be a bit more ruthless in the last third because we should have put the game to bed by half-time.

“When it’s 1-0 for so long and you see chances go begging, you worry that you might rue those misses. But thankfully we stood firm.

“And then Jimmy Hallett, who was on fire throughout, crossed for Gerry to score our second.

“Things will come together but looking at the performance as a whole I was pleased.”

Second-placed Sports and rivals Easton, who both meet at Weymouth College this Saturday, are separated only by goal difference.

Meanwhile, Alcock has revealed that the club plan to appeal against De La Planque’s dismissal against AC Matravers for dissent.

He added: “I’ve spoken to AC Matravers’ captain and he said that Gerry shouldn’t have been sent off. He agreed that what Gerry said wasn’t directed at the referee so hopefully we’ll be able to get our appeal in before Saturday and then it’s up to the DCFA to decide what they do.”
