Wigan’s Will Grigg wrote the latest chapter in his career when he scored the game’s only goal to eliminate Manchester City from the FA Cup and take his team into the competition’s quarter-finals.
Here, Press Association Sport looks at five things you might not know about the Northern Ireland international.
1. A career that nearly never got going
Grigg, 26, almost never played professional football at all. Before he had established himself at Walsall, he had been released by Birmingham, aged 15, when he was returning from a career-threatening broken leg.
2. Euro 2016 heartache
Though his cult status was largely built on the popularity of a supporter’s chant about him that became widely known during Euro 2016, the striker did not actually play a single minute of Northern Ireland’s run to the competition’s knockout stages.
3. More than just a chant
While he is perhaps best known for that chant, Will Grigg’s On Fire, he also has his own goal celebration, known as “The Griggle”.
4. No stranger to the FA Cup
Having made his professional debut as a substitute in Walsall’s 0-0 draw at Cheltenham in December 2008, Grigg had to wait almost two years to make his first start, incidentally in the FA Cup, against Torquay in November 2010.
5. Crossing the second city divide
Like the rest of his family, Grigg was an Aston Villa supporter, until he began his time at their bitter cross-city rivals Birmingham, aged seven, and “started to turn a bit”.
