LYTCHETT MINSTER 20

WEYMOUTH & PORTLAND 0

WEYMOUTH suffered their sixth straight defeat away to Lytchett Minster in Wadworth 6x Dorset & Wilts One South.

The Seasiders suffered a difficult start, conceding two tries inside the opening 15 minutes as they quickly fell behind.

The Weymouth side were giving the ball away too easily, allowing attacks to break down despite the good performance from the forwards.

The side were forcing passes that were not on, which allowed the home side to regain possession.

Weymouth coach Anthony Coburn said his side had a good 70 per cent of possession over the course of the match but couldn’t convert their chances and capitalise.

A late attack seemed sure to get them on the board but it broke down as Lytchett then went up the other end and scored a try to widen the scoreline further in the last 30 seconds.

The game ended 20-0 to the home side but Coburn saw the positives from the performance.

He said: “There were so many positives to take out of the game, although we didn’t win the game the score didn’t really reflect the match.

“It’s just about being able to put what we do in training into a game.”

Reflecting on the match he said: “It was a must-win game, we were quite confident that we could win it.”

Coburn highlighted Kevin and John Leatham’s performance saying: “They proved what is required in a real dogfight.”

The result leaves Weymouth & Portland down in 11th place with two points.

Commenting on their current situation in Coburn said:

“We know we’re in a hard slog for the rest of the season but we are up for it.”

Weymouth & Portland have struggled for form this season with one win in nine matches, a 17-10 victory against Oakmeadians, after a summer that saw a large number of players leave.

Coburn said: “It’s a difficult season for us with the fact that so many players have left and I came on board at the beginning of the season having inherited a second team.

Weymouth next face North Dorset Seconds, who are nine points and one place above them in the table, at home on Saturday, December 9

Coburn added: “Each game is a building block for us, we’re trying to learn from every single game.”
