WIMBORNE II 7

DORCHESTER took another step towards promotion with a straight forward bonus point win over visitors Wimborne in Dorset & Wilts One South.

The county town side were always in control of this encounter at Coburg Road despite being heavily on the wrong end of the penalty count.

James Baker, Dorchester’s leading try scorer this season but who had not scored in the previous three games, opened the scoring carrying three defenders over the line in the left corner.

Then several Wimborne defenders made a hash of dealing with George Foot’s chip and allowed full-back Matt Read to get the touchdown.

Both Baker and Read then crossed again and Dorchester had the bonus point in the bag well before half-time.

As the clock ticked down towards the break Cameron Wills blasted his way over the line for Dorchester’s fifth try.

With the conversion successful by Baker, this gave the home side a 27-point lead at half-time.

The second-half continued in much the same fashion with Dorchester dominating in both possession and territory.

Callum King intercepted on the 22 and strolled in under the posts for a very easy try.

As the game drifted on a little with the result already not looking in doubt, Wills went over for his fourth try in three games.

The visitors battled bravely on and got their reward with a converted try in the dying minutes.

Dorchester coach Rich Bament who had expected a tough game from the visitors, was happy with the outcome and no injuries to aid squad selection for the final three games left in the league campaign.

Bament said: “The players knew what I expected of them and they produced a good performance to win comfortably.

“We need to stay focused on the next game and keep the momentum going. The squad collectively know we are in a strong position and are determined to keep the tempo up see out the league on a high.”

Meanwhile, Dorchester A XV also recorded a win against Bournemouth Fourths as the visitors were unable to field a team. All was not lost as the few that did travel mixed with the Dorchester A squad to play a friendly game.

This weekend being the Easter break means all senior teams have a rest but many players will still turn out for the friendly on Good Friday when a Dorchester select XV take on a Surcouf XV at Coburg Road.
