NORTH DORSET SECONDS 19

WEYMOUTH & PORTLAND 28

WEYMOUTH & Portland continued their great escape away from the bottom of the table with a superb 28-19 win against North Dorset Seconds in Dorset & Wilts One South.

The victory completes a double over North Dorset Seconds and moves them on to 17 points, second from bottom and four clear of relegation rivals Lytchett Minster.

Weymouth began as they meant to go on, putting the home side under early pressure and secured two early penalties in the first 15 minutes, which were dispatched by Alex Toms to give the away side an early 6-0 lead.

The good start would continue as, after 25 minutes, captain Dave Oaksford went over from close range to add the visitors’ first try of the match, with the conversion missed to hand the Seahorses a healthy lead.

Full-back Khylo Farley then added another after he found himself clear and ran half the length of the field to score as the first period came to a close.

The conversion was struck to leave Weymouth 18-0 ahead just before the interval.

However, North Dorset were not done and struck back swiftly from the left with the conversion successful to leave the score 18-7 at the break.

Oaksford then scored a similar try to his first as he piled on once more 15 minutes into the second half, with an unsuccessful conversion for what would prove to be the winning try.

The hosts again hit back with a great move through their outside-centre and caught the away side napping

Norton Rogers added the try that would hand the Seahorses a much-needed bonus point down the right giving a superb 28-12 lead to the away side.

The home side responded once more in the last couple of minutes with a converted try to make the final score 28-19 but they could not add further as it proved destined to be the Seahorses’ day as they pulled further away from danger.

Seahorses’ head coach Simon Litster said: “We have left it very late but I think the great escape might be continuing.

“There was great attitude throughout the week, so we had great preparation for the game.

“It was an all-round good performance, everybody played well.

“Man of the match was Billy Hayne who played a fantastic game at flanker.”
