DEFENDER Ashley Wells insists there was no hesitation in renewing his contract with the Terras for next season and described it as an honour to represent his hometown club.

The 22-year-old recently put pen to paper on a revised deal and, speaking to Echosport, he put forward his main ambitions for next year’s campaign.

He said: “Weymouth was always where I wanted to stay, it’s the local club for me and I watched them as a kid.

“I always wanted to play for them and as soon as they offered me a new deal I snapped it up.

“It’s my hometown team and when you’re a kid you look up to those players in the first team, so it’s a great honour to play in it now.

“Hopefully this year I don’t get injured and play as much as possible because I had a few niggles last season.

“I want to nail down a place at right-back. I wouldn’t say I’ve got a good left foot, I can use it when I need to, but I’m not comfortable on it yet. I want to be able to run at players on the right.”

The versatile defender, who has been with the club for three-and-a-half years since his switch from Portland United, was hit by injuries last season following a horrific ankle break in a pre-season friendly against Bristol City in July 2012.

But Wells is now hopeful that he is ready to put all of that behind him and progress further with the Terras. “I am hoping to be able to play every game when selected,” he added.

“I tweaked my hamstring at the end of last season and had a slight tear in it. It was a weird experience because it just went, but I have been given some exercises and, hopefully, I’ll just stretch for a bit longer to make sure it is okay.”

Wells also believes that this could be the season for the club to mount a big push.

He added: “Jason (Matthews) wants to turn us into a side that’s competing at the top or in the top six. He is looking to build a very good team, and the players he is talking to are a really good indication of where the club should be.”

What a great interview. That's the sort of commitment the team need for next season. Good luck Terras.
