TERRAS: Sam Poole to stay at Weymouth
SAM Poole has put any uncertainty over his Weymouth future to bed by signing a new one-year deal at the Bob Lucas Stadium.
It appeared the defender could have been heading for the Terras’ exit door after originally turning down a revised contract offer.
But boss Jason Matthews told Echosport yesterday that the former captain had put pen to paper on another 12 months with the club.
And Matthews had nothing but good things to say about Poole when confirming the news.
He said: “We never really wanted Sam to leave and both parties came together to sort it out.
“I’m really delighted that Sam has agreed a one-year deal because all along I’ve been saying to him how he is a big part of my plans.
“The first thing I did when I got the manager’s job was to make him captain and he did very well for me.
“He lost some form last season and it was hard for him to get his place back when the two central defenders we had on loan were playing well.
“But I never doubted that Sam wouldn’t be able to return and I know he is chomping at the bit to come back.
“I’ve been hearing that he has worked really hard in the summer and has done a couple of sessions with the reserves.
“Sam has got a first-class attitude and it’s fair to say he is Weymouth through and through.
“I’m absolutely delighted he has signed and hopefully he can kick on from here.”
