MAGPIES: Martin heads to World Cup final
LONG-SERVING Magpies’ secretary Dave Martin has been given the chance of a “once in a lifetime” trip to tomorrow’s World Cup final in Brazil.
Martin, pictured, will be one of more than 70,000 fans at the Maracana Stadium in Rio to watch Germany and Argentina battle it out for the game’s biggest prize.
The Dorchester official had been hoping to see the host country in the final, but the Brazilian dream came to a crashing halt when they were thrashed 7-1 by the Germans in the last four.
Joachim Low’s men now face an Argentina side that scraped past the Netherlands on penalties to reach the final.
Speaking to Echosport before he set off, Martin said: “Last season I represented the Football Conference on the FA Council.
“The FA had a small number of tickets for the final and me and a friend from Manchester decided to buy one for what is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
“I’ve been busy at work so that has taken my mind off it but I’m quite excited now.”
He added: “I’ve been to 20 FA Cup finals and watched England at the World Cup in France and Germany, and the Euros in Belgium.
“I went to the final of last season’s Champions League as well so this finishes things off nicely.”
Tomorrow sees Germany and Argentina clash in a World Cup final for the third time.
Diego Maradona inspired Argentina to a 3-2 victory in 1986 before Andreas Brehme’s penalty gained revenge for the Germans four year later.
