ATHLETICS: Anniversary Games bid for Blake
PAUL Blake can’t wait to rub shoulders with some of the biggest names in athletics when he takes part in the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games next weekend.
The meeting, marking two years since the 2012 Olympics, sees Paralympic Games silver and bronze medallist Blake, 24, line up in a T36/37 100m at Horse Guards Parade.
Reigning IPC world 800m champion Blake set a personal best over the shorter distance earlier this season and he is hoping to better that at an event featuring top names such as Greg Rutherford and David Weir.
“The Olympic Stadium isn’t available this year so they are doing it like the Great City Games in Manchester,” said Blake.
“They are staging events on The Mall and at Horse Guards Parade and it’s great to be invited to take part.
“We’re always trying to build the reputation of Paralympic sport and it’s a unique event this year.
“The 100m isn’t really my event but I’m looking forward to it and I’d love to win the race.
“I’ve been working really hard in training and producing the times, but it’s just about doing it on the track now.
“I hope to set a new personal best there, that’s what I’m going for, and I’m in good shape at the moment.”
Blake is set to find out whether he has made the British team for August’s IPC European Championships in Swansea the day after running in London.
