PORTLAND UNITED 4 WAREHAM RANGERS 1

THE Blues made it a magnificent seven wins from their first seven league games on Saturday with a 4-1 defeat of Wareham Rangers at Grove Corner.

Portland boss Gary Bailey hailed his side’s performance and excellent start to the season after they kept up their 100 per cent record.

Ross Doidge set the ball rolling just seven minutes in with a shot that squirmed underneath the Wareham keeper.

The lead was doubled by Lewis Clarke on 36 minutes, the striker beating his man for pace before slotting an effort into the far corner.

Then, on the stroke of half-time, Ross Carmichael headed in after the keeper had saved Lewis Whyton’s header.

Portland had to wait until 11 minutes from time to get their fourth, Charlie May converting a Jake Price corner into the roof of the net.

Sam Coakes netted a consolation for the visitors late on but Bailey was ecstatic with Port-land’s display.

“We were 3-0 up at half-time and could have had more but their keeper made two or three really good saves to keep the score down,” he said.

“We made three substitutions in the second half and you can lose your rhythm when you do that.

“We scored another goal and were a bit disappointed to let one in towards the end.”

We went on to add: “Credit to the players, that’s seven wins from seven now, we couldn’t wish for anything more.

“We’ve won every game so far and only conceded three goals so you can’t get much better than that.

“The players worked hard in pre-season and are getting better and better.

“I’m really pleased that the goals are coming from all over the pitch and we’re not just relying on Lewis Clarke or Adam Linaker.

“It has been a busy month with seven games in three weeks, which is a lot for players who are working full-time as well.”
