THE Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy is in the running for a national award for its attitude to the environment.

The sailing centre and Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) have been shortlisted for a Sport Industry Award.

They are nominated for an Environmental Concern in Sport Award for their entry, Powering the National Sailing Academy.

Academy chief executive Mark Stubbings said: "I am absolutely delighted that we have been shortlisted for this award.

"It is testament to our continued commitment to being one of the most environmentally-friendly sports venues in the country."

The award entry detailed how the academy and SSE have been working together to minimise the centre's impact on the environment.

The academy has been able to generate its own renewable energy on site.

The partnership between WPNSA and SSE was promoted and managed by sports agency Fast Track Sailing.

SEE chief executive Ian Marchant added: "Working with a high-profile venue such as WPNSA has provided us with both a vital test-bed and a platform to showcase our emerging renewable technologies and products.

"Through this headline sponsorship, SSE has also been able to develop community sailing programmes alongside WPNSA, demonstrating our support for grass roots sports."

The Sport Industry Awards will take place in London on May 1.
