Villagers carried the Cross

Villagers plant the Cross on Chapel Hill Villagers plant the Cross on Chapel Hill

Abbotsbury

  • HOLY Week saw several special services at St Nicholas Church; Maundy Thursday when the sanctuary was symbolically cleared of its furnishings, Good Friday with the Walk of Witness to St Catherine’s Chapel and of course the glorious Easter Sunday service.

Following the solemn service in church on Good Friday the large wooden cross was carried through the village and up Chapel Hill with rests for readings on the way.

The menfolk took it in turns to carry the burden to the top where Rev Ada Whittock took over and carried it for the last stretch, on the flat.

It was then placed in the ground beyond the chapel overlooking Lyme Bay.

Easter Sunday was glorious in its contrast, with Easter biscuits for all and an Easter egg hunt for the children after the service.

The church was ablaze with flowers after the bareness of Lent.

  • MAY 5th is election day.

This time the result of the Abbotsbury Parish Council vote is not a forgone conclusion as there are five candidates for four seats.

It is hoped that everyone will exercise his or her democratic right and vote.

There will be three voting papers, local elections, the AV referendum and for your county officers.

Strangways Hall will be open for voting from 7.00am – 10pm

  • THE annual Chesil Bank Parish Council meeting will take place in Strangways Hall on Monday May 9 at 7.30pm.

At this meeting the parish council officers are elected.

It might be all change as a result of parish elections and the change in the ratio of officers for the Chesil Bank villages.
