FOLLOWING the first successful ‘Scattering of Scarecrows’ in 2007 a second scattering recently took place in conjunction with this year’s St Martin's Church Open Gardens event. This time there was the added incentive of a Broadmayne Scarecrow Cup being awarded for the best scarecrow, judged by children who took the scarecrow trail.

Safety in the home for WI members

AT the annual meeting of Broadmayne and West Knighton WI, Peter Brown of the Dorset Fire and Rescue Service gave a most interesting and informative talk about safety in the home, with a film showing how quickly a small smoulder in a chair can develop into a whole room ablaze. Members were advised on many areas of potential danger, especially with cooking, cigarettes, candles and electrical equipment and if members had thought they knew it all, they were wrong, as Mr Brown’s horror tales were a salutary reminder of the care that should be taken.

Broadmayne needs more scarecrows

Council refused a planning decision to erect 50 stables, together with ancillary accommodation, including owner’s house and carer’s flat with associated car parking and access at Whitcombe.

Composed limericks were read out by their authors, with imaginatively invented endings, and Katy Smith told of her experience, with two others, of taking part in the County New Members’ meeting in Dorchester.

THANKS to the residents of Broadmayne and West Knighton, £250 was raised at the annual coffee morning for a Christmas lunch for the 36 members of Cowleaze Luncheon Club. The older residents of the villages attend a monthly lunch when they pay for the cost of food, cooked by volunteers.

A Fayre and Gift Day will be held in St Martin's Church and Hall, Broadmayne to celebrate St Martin, the patron saint’s festival, on Saturday, November 8 from 10am to noon. There will be many items for Christmas, a tombola, raffle, craft, children's games, plants, books, jigsaws, not to mention cakes and preserves and an opportunity to sit and chat with a cup of tea or coffee.
