• THE rain and wind didn't stop the Chickerell Carnival Day from going ahead on Saturday, August 16th nor did it deter the locals from turning out.

The dog and animal shows were a great success with many dogs being walked around with multiple rosettes on their leads to signify their wins!

I was particularly taken with Holly the cute lop eared rabbit who came second in her class.

The Amberlight majorettes also bravely danced on in the rain.

The highlight of the afternoon for me and my children were the birds of prey.

What beautiful creatures they were beadily watching everyone passing by.

The Mayor of Chickerell, Councillor Norman Carter, opened the carnival at 2pm and presented prizes to the winners of the carnival posters competition.

This competition was run for the Chickerell primary school children and the winners this year were: Years 1 and 2 - Alice Sibley, Years 3 and 4 - Tom Jones and Years 5 and 6 - Shara Cornick.

Their posters were put up all around Chickerell in the weeks leading up to the big day. Well done to them.

After winning a bottle of wine on the tombola we enjoyed a warming hot dog which was cooked for us by two of the councillors from Chickerell town council.

Other highlights were the tae kwando display, and the live music.

Thanks must go to the Willowbed Hall Management Committee for all the organisation and hard work both on the day and in the months leading up to it.

THE Charlestown Victory Hall committee are seeking help with the running of the hall.

They would like to ask if there is anyone who lives in the Charlestown or Chickerell area who would be prepared to go along one day a month just for a couple of hours.

They would be required to dust all through the hall and wipe over the floors of the foyer and kitchen.

This would be on a voluntary basis and would be very much appreciated.

For further information please contact the secretary of the committee, Marion Hardcastle, on 01305 761744.

They would also like to report that they have welcomed a new member on to their committee.

His name is Nigel Carr and he is a Weymouth fire fighter and also a volunteer with the Lifeboat Service.

I am sure he will be a great asset to the future running of the hall and they would like to wish him well in his role.

THE Chickerell Methodist Church will be holding a coffee morning on Saturday, August 30th.

It starts at 10am and finishes at 12. There will be the usual cakes, bric-a-brac and raffle.

All friends old and new are welcome to attend.

AN open air Songs of Praise will be held on the Willowbed Field on Sunday, August 31st at 6pm. If the weather is wet it will be held in the hall.

The evening will involve all the Christian communities in Chickerell.

Tea and coffee will be served after the event. Everyone is welcome to attend.
