Christmas services in Weymouth, Portland and Dorchester area

The Echo has compiled a list of services taking place on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. 

Benefice of Abbotsbury, Portesham and Langton Herring 

St Nicholas Church, Abbotsbury, will host a Midnight Holy Communion on Christmas Eve at 11.30pm. A Family Communion will take place the following day at 10.30am. 

The Church of St Peter, Portesham, will host a crib service on Christmas Eve at 4pm. This will be followed by a Midnight Holy Communion later that evening, starting at 11.30pm. The following day there will be a Family Communion at 10.30am. 

The Parish of Radipole and Melcombe Regis 

St Mary’s Church, St Mary’s Street will celebrate Christmas Day with a short communion service at 10am. 

Emmanuel Church, Southill, will host a Christingle service on Christmas Eve at 4pm. On Christmas Day a Christmas Communion will begin at 8.45am, which will be followed by a family celebration at 10am. 

At St John’s Church, Greenhill, a carol service will take place on Christmas Eve starting at 6.30pm. The following day there will be a Holy Communion at 9am, followed by an all age Christmas celebration at 10.30am. 

St Aldhelm’s Church, Spa Road, will host a Christingle service on Christmas Eve at 4pm. On Christmas Day a family celebration communion will be held at 10am. 

St Ann’s Church, Radipole Lane, will host carols by candlelight on Christmas Eve from 6.30pm. A Midnight Communion will take place the same evening, beginning at 11.30pm. On Christmas Day there will be a Christmas celebration with a short communion to follow at 10.30am. 

Parish of Wyke Regis 

Carols by candlelight will be performed at St Edmunds Church on Christmas Eve from 6.30pm. A Midnight Mass, however, will be held at All Saints from 11.30pm. 

All Saints will host a Christmas Day said Eucharist from 8.30am, which will be followed by a Christmas Day sung Eucharist at 9.30am. 

St Edmunds Church, meanwhile, will host a Christmas Day sung Eucharist at 11am. 

St Francis of Assisi Church, Littlemoor

At St Francis of Assisi Church, Littlemoor, a Christingle and carol service in aid of The Children’s Society will be held. It will begin at 6.30pm on Christmas Eve. 

On Christmas Day there will be a Family Communion at 9.30am. 

St Paul’s Church, Weymouth

Three events are being held at St Paul’s Church, Abbotsbury Road, on Christmas Eve. 

Proceedings will begin with a Christingle service at 4pm. This will be followed by carols by candlelight  at 7pm. A Midnight Mass will also take place starting at 11.30pm. 

On Christmas Day, meanwhile, there will be a service starting at 10.30am. 

Parish of Portland

Midnight Mass will be celebrated in each of the Parish of Portland Churches on Christmas Eve. 

This includes St Andrew’s in Southwell, All Saints in Easton, and St John’s in Fortuneswell. All services will commence at 11.30pm. 

St John’s will host a Holy Communion on Christmas Day at 8am, followed by a service for all ages at 10am. 

All Saints’ Holy Communion will also begin at 8am with a service for all ages at the slightly earlier time of 9.30am. 

St Andrew’s will host a Christmas Day service for all ages at 9.30am. 

Team Ministry of Dorchester and The Winterbournes 

The Church of St Thomas a Becket in Compton Valence will host a service on Christmas Day starting at 9.30am. 

St George’s, Fordington, will start proceedings with a crib service on Christmas Eve, starting at 4.30pm. 

This will be followed by a Midnight Mass. People should arrive at the church for 11.15pm. 

On Christmas Day services will be held at 8am and 10.15am. 

The Church of St Mary the Virgin, Edward Road, will put on a Christingle service on Christmas Eve at 4pm, as well as a crib service. 

A Midnight Mass will take place the same day, with proceedings starting at 11.15pm. On Christmas Day there will be services at 8am and 9.45am. 

St Peter’s Church, High West Street, will also have a Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve with events starting at 11.30pm. The following day a service will take place at 10am. 

At the Church of St Martin in Martinstown a crib service will be held on Christmas Eve, starting at 4pm. On Christmas Day the church will hold a service at 11am. 

A crib service will be held at St Mary’s Church in Winterborne Abbas on Christmas Eve beginning at 3pm. 

There will also be a Midnight Mass with proceedings taking place from 11pm. 

At the Church of St Simon and St Jude in Winterborne Monkton, a Christmas Day service will take place at 11.15am. 

At St Andrew’s Church in West Stafford a joint carol and Christingle service will be held on Christmas Eve. This will start at 4.30pm and be followed by a crib service at 6.30pm. 

A Midnight Mass will begin at 11.15pm and a Christmas Day service will be held at 10am.

The United Benefice of Charminster and Stinsford 

At St Mary’s Church in Charminster, all of the services will be held in the village hall due to the church being closed after it was flooded.

On Christmas Eve at 11pm, there will be a Holy Eucharist Service, before the midnight mass. On Christmas Day, at 8am, there will be a Holy Communion and at 9.30am there will be a Holy Eucharist. 

At St Michael’s Church in Stinsford there will be a Holy Eucharist and Midnight Mass from 11pm on Christmas Eve. On Christmas Day there will be a Holy Eucharist at 10am.

The Watercombe Benefice 

A crib service will be held at St Martin’s in Broadmayne on Christmas Eve, starting at 3.30pm. This will be followed by a carol service at 6pm. 

A Holy Communion will be held at St Michael’s in Owermoigne starting at 11.30pm. 

On Christmas Day Holy Communions will be held at St Peter’s in West Knighton and Holy Trinity in Warmwell, both starting at 9am. 

A Family Communion will begin at St Martin’s in Broadmayne at 10.15am. An hour later a Holy Communion will take place at St Catherine’s in Holworth. 

The Benefice of Puddletown, Tolpuddle and Melbourne with Dewlish 

Crib services will be held in Tolpuddle and Puddletown on Christmas Eve. The crib service at the Church of St John the Evangelist in Tolpuddle will begin at 3.30pm whilst the crib service at the Church of St Mary the Virgin in Puddletown will start at 5pm.

Milborne St Andrews Church and the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Puddletown, will also host Midnight Mass services with proceedings beginning at 11.30pm. 

On Christmas Day Holy Communion will take place in Tolpuddle and All Saints Church, Dewlish, with services starting at 9.30am. At Milborne a Christmas celebration will begin at 10.15am whilst ‘Christmas Praise’ will be held in Puddletown at 11.15am.

The Chalk Stream Benefice 

‘A Round the Christmas Tree’ event will be held at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Stratton on Christmas Eve at 6pm. This will be followed later by a Holy Communion at 11.30pm. 

The Church of St Mary, Bradford Peverell and the Church of St Nicholas, Sidling St Nicholas are also hosting Holy Communion services, both beginning at 10.30pm. 

On Christmas Day a Holy Communion will be held in Frampton at 10.30am. 

At the same time a family service will be held in Sidling St Nicholas whilst a Christmas celebration will be held in Bradford Peverell.

Dorchester Community Church, Acland Road

Dorchester Community Church is hosting a Christmas Day family service starting at 10am. 

Children are invited to bring along a small present they've received.
