The two Weymouth Abbeyfield Houses, Legh and Macpherson, combined to hold a fete in the latter’s garden in Wyke Oliver Road. The good weather encouraged a bumper turnout of residents and visitors, plus more than a few well behaved dogs! On show was a wide array of stalls offering beautiful homemade cards, jewellery, books, plants, artwork and new to you items. Cream tea refreshments were much enjoyed and the hamburger stall was doing brisk business - so much so that a runner was sent to the house kitchen with a plea for more fried onions! A highlight of the afternoon was a very professional performance by the WOW Kids under the watchful eyes of John and Janet Stockley. It was nice to see the equal mix of boys and girls really putting their hearts into some very lively song and dance routines. The proceeds of the fete went to providing amenities for the residents, split equally between the Legh and Macpherson houses.

The traditional red telephone box in Sutton Poyntz was in danger of being removed by BT, but they offered to sell it to a local community group. The Sutton Poyntz Society stepped into the breach, and thanks to the magnificent generosity of a local benefactor the telephone box has been saved for posterity. Such public spirited act deserves mention, so well done to Dave Winkle for donating the £1 that BT were demanding!

The August draw of the St Andrew’s School 200 club took place in Miss Shepherd's year 6 class. Ned Hazel drew the £50 prize for Adam Kepple, Scott Stallman helped Ray Jones to £30, and Charlotte Scothern selected Alison Maton for the £15 prize. All the money from the monthly draw goes towards facilities for the children, so contact Helen Webb at helencwebb@fsmail.net if you would like to help.

David Mannings tells me that the last collection time for letters from post boxes in our area is now 4.30 pm not 5 pm. The Post Office is not going to alter the notices on the boxes to let people know, so this is your only warning. If you want your letter to go that day, make sure it is in the box by 4.30pm.
