THE highlight of the ladies evening held in the village hall on November 14 was an hour-long fashion show by kind courtesy of The Dressing Room in Dorchester. The evening opened with everyone getting to know each other over a glass of wine and with an opportunity to buy fashion accessories and Christmas gifts. To get everyone into a “Fashion” frame of mind a fashion-based quiz took place - did you know that King Louis XIV of France introduced high-heeled shoes to the world of fashion? Ruth Lane and her team won the quiz.

The Osmington Society has held two very successful and enjoyable events so far this year. In May a wine tasting evening was led by Jacques de Cateret who has worked in the industry for more years than he cares to remember (or, indeed, can). He presented six wines, ranging from less to more expensive, and guests were able to make their own notes on them. This was followed by a cold buffet of cheeses and pâtés, with an opportunity to buy more of the wine. Fortunately, everyone was local and was able to stagger home safely.

The Osmington Community Plan is being developed to improve the quality of life for our community, and of the environment in which we live. We now need to identify those areas in our lives where improvements are needed so that steps can be set in train to prepare as best we can for an uncertain future. To that end, questionnaires have been developed (one for adults, one for youngsters) which will be distributed very shortly throughout Osmington, the Mills, Ringstead and Upton. Following analysis of the results and further discussions the community will then be consulted with a view to the adoption of a draft Action Plan.

OSMINGTON’S most senior citizen, Reg Smith, celebrated his 100th birthday on 18 August. Since coming to live at Fermoy House in the 1960s Reg has been one of the most faithful members of St. Osmund’s congregation. Though the church choir, of which he was one of the stalwarts, has long since disappeared, he still tackles the steep path to the church every Sunday, to take his place alongside the organ. A small surprise party was therefore arranged for him in the church after the morning service on Sunday, 17 August, when he was presented with a special birthday cake by Andrew Mills, who had conducted the service.

A HIGHLIGHT of this year’s patronal festival weekend at St. Osmund’s church was the delightful range of floral arrangements throughout the church, created by the children of the parish.
