I WAS lucky enough to be invited to a shared Mother’s Day lunch at Portesham school recently.

Children and their families shared a delicious ocean pie with cheesy mash and veg, followed by an extremely light chocolate fudge cake, all cooked from scratch using local produce where possible, in the school kitchen.

The children then presented each of us with a gingerbread “mum” together with some beautiful daffodils.

The school also holds regular community lunches. The next one is at 1pm on Thursday, 5 May and will cost £5. The menu is roast pork with apple sauce, roast potatoes and a selection of seasonal vegetables followed by Dorset apple cake served warm with cream. Contact the school office on 871283 to book.

  • ECO week was enjoyed by all the children and the many family members who joined them on their various trips at the end of March.

Class I visited Corfe Castle – their third castle visit this term, to coincide with their castle learning dimension.

Class 2 had 2 trips – a nature walk to Hardy’s monument and a beach clean at Abbotsbury. They collected 14 bin bags of rubbish in 90 minutes which were later safely disposed of at a local waste recycling centre.

The Science Museum in London was the exciting destination for the children in Class 3. They visited the hands on Energy and Launchpad galleries to give them a better understanding of their study on climate change.

  • ST Peter’s church was delighted to have raised over £475 at their latest continental style village café.

There were various stalls including cakes, plants, crafts, cards, tombola and a raffle and often a queue for pastries, posh cakes, bacon butties and filter coffee. Children were catered for with a lavender bag making activity and a competition to design a card for Mothering Sunday.

The next café will be on Saturday, 16 April where the Portesham Projects team are raising money to help purchase grit bins for the village.

The final Lent safari lunch will take place at Portesham Methodist church on Monday, 11 April, 1230 – 2pm and both churches will join together on Palm Sunday, 17 April for a united service and procession around the village. Meet on the village green at 1020.

  • THE Angel Cake Company will be paying their second visit to Portesham WI on Tuesday, 12 April, 7.15pm at Portesham village hall. The AGM will also be held.
  • RBL (Abbotsbury and Portesham) will hold their quarterly branch meeting at Portesham Methodist hall on Thursday, 14 April. Start time 7.30pm
